FanWorks Con report day one: Thursday
I've been gushing about Con to my s.o. since getting home yesterday and it occurs to me - I have these occasional moments of clarity - that dreamwidth might find my recounting of every minute detail slightly more compelling.
I've never been a go-to-a-convention-and-then-publish-a-convention-report person, I've always been more of the, go-to-a-convention-and-have-an-invisible-anxiety-meltdown type, so full disclosure (1) my excitement about this con might actually be excitement about successful management of social anxiety (2) when it comes to writing convention reports I have no idea what I'm doing.
Right, ok. The weekend got off to a wild start because I left for the airport with a solid case of sleep deprivation, so my memory of Thursday is like... a series of "what just happened?" vibes. The Montreal-Toronto flight was uneventful, but in Toronto the customs line was ludicrously backed up and I came close to missing my connecting flight (imagine a whole "running through the airport" montage thing.) Except when I finally sprinted onto the plane (literally)
fairestcat was there, in the second row, hair a highly pigmented multicoloured beacon of fandomness. It was amazing. I highly recommend that experience. Anyway next thing I knew, I was clutching an emotional support cappuccino in Detroit and we were hunting down the hotel shuttle.
Once we'd checked in and acquired a
lovelokest,
fairestcat needed to go to the pharmacy so there was a plan to walk a few blocks to CVS. I was at this point, I have to say, surprised by how ok I felt? Given my whole sleep deprivation situation? So I was like "yay walking!" and tagged along. Our weather apps said "30% chance of light rain." Which means, of course...
Actual footage of our trip to CVS last Thursday:

So yeah there was a monsoon and we sheltered under some trees. It was raining very hard, hard enough that trying to use our phones to book a taxi or otherwise call for help was essentially out of the question. So we tried to wait it out. I suggested reenacting film scenes involving pouring rain and/or live-acting some rain-based prompts but by the time I had started describing my vision (it mainly involved taking turns declaring unrequited love and proposing, but I also had this plot bunny concept involving Aziraphale goading Crowley into shoving him up against a tree by singing My Favourite Things)
lovelokest had had the idea of ducking under
fairestcat's skirt long enough to wipe off her phone and tweet for help. That was the first of many instances of apparent telepathy on their part -
fairestcat reading
lovelokest's mind is the only explanation for how utterly unsurprised she was that
lovelokest was standing next to us one minute, and underneath her dress the next.
I mean talk about drift compatible.
Anyway, anyway, we were heroically rescued!
revolutionaryjo, driving
bessyboo's blue charriot car, came to pick us up, and did not even make fun of us. Like it was so chivalrous.
Then there was food, and then my brain extremely crashed around 7:30pm so I have no idea what happened at the scavenger hunt. And now I am realizing that this report is getting longer than planned so maybe I'm going to write up one day at a time? Ok maybe I'll do that. So that was Thursday! \o/
